Citizens Academy Spring 2008 Session

From: CitizensAcademy CitizensAcademy <CitizensAcademy_at_(domain_name_was_removed)>
Date: Fri Mar 14 2008 - 15:44:15 PST

We invite you to apply to the Spring 2008 San Mateo County Citizens Academy.

This eight-week civic engagement course is designed to educate the public about the breadth of services offered by your County government and to encourage volunteerism. The program is free of charge.

Many of the services offered by government can be overlooked - yet they are essential for the health and safety of the community. This is especially true on the county level, where the services are often not as visible as those provided by the municipal, state or federal government. At the same time, San Mateo County is always looking for strong, diverse community support and participation.

Meaningful participation requires a keen understanding and knowledge of county operations, as well as an appreciation of the public purpose. Since the Citizens Academy began in 1999, more than 300 people have graduated from the program.

Participants are asked to attend Tuesday evening sessions over eight weeks and two Saturday field trips. The field trips include a tour of the men's jail and the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.

The program opens the doors to many facilities and provides the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue about local programs, priorities and policies with elected officials, county department heads and other community leaders.

The Spring 2008 session begins on Tuesday, April 1, and concludes on Tuesday, May 20. More information and an on-line application are available at www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/CitizensAcademy

If you have any questions about Citizens Academy or would like to request an application, please contact the County Manager's Office at (650) 363-4153.
