Subject: Willows Traffic Study

Dear Mayor Cohen and members of the Menlo Park City Council:

It’s dej? vu all over again! It seems the City of Menlo Park is caught in a time warp where 1993 and 2008 are running parallel.

It’s 1993 or 2008 – take your pick.

1 - A small vocal group claiming to represent the entire Willows neighborhood wants to change traffic patterns of the neighborhood. 2 - This same group wants to eliminate cut through traffic coming from East Palo Alto because “they are driving on our streets.” 3 – Suggestions are closing streets, concrete traffic circles or other concrete barriers. 4 – The City of Menlo Park spends lots of money investigating, studying, hiring consultants, etc. 5 – Lots of meetings are held. Those coming to the meetings are the residents who want to change the neighborhood. The majority of the neighborhood, satisfied with the status quo, doesn’t want to waste time in meetings.

And then we come to 1994. At great cost to the city, the concrete hits the streets and the neighborhood goes berserk. It gets quite nasty. The City spends more money on meetings and consultants. The outcome: at the end of 1995 most of the concrete is removed, again, at cost to the city.

Are you going to subject the Willows to another round of this divisive scenario in 2008? Or will you follow the sensible Neighborhood Traffic Management Program that is already in place in Menlo Park?

I remind you that no resident “owns” their street. The street is a public thoroughfare paid for and maintained by public funds. Anyone is entitled to drive on Menlo Park streets. Speeding and crime are in the purview of law enforcement and I commend the Menlo Park Police Department for the fine job it has done and continues to do.

Please think very carefully of the ramifications of what a few residents are asking you to do.

Sincerely yours,
Barbara Hunter Received on Sat Mar 8 10:48:07 2008
