Council Member Carlton,

At the end of the City’s Goal Setting meeting Saturday February 1 you announced that you would be traveling next week on a trip to Dubai to learn about Dubai’s Smart City and traffic signals. Is this fact finding trip being taken on behalf of the City Council or a personal journey for your own edification? To travel over 14,000 miles by air will add 4.2 tons of C02 to the atmosphere for just your one seat on the plane.

There is a web site entitled “Lovin Dubai” that has an overview of Dubai’s traffic signal project that you might take a look at. Could you not conduct your research by using the computer?

Check out this link on Dubai’s Smart City program:

The City began a program in 2009 to become climate neutral by 2025. We have made efforts to adopt green building standards for developments that come before the Planning Commission and the Council. We have had a popular Drive Less Challenge in which residents have changed their driving habits and taken up bicycling and walking. The Safe Routes to School and the Transportation Master Plan are both programs that have received increased attention from residents in the City. Both the City’s Menlo Green Challenge and Menlospark are diligently working to educate and assist residents in their efforts to cut their carbon footprint.

> I realize your interest in travel to China, Japan, India, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Tel Aviv have become more frequent in the past 4 years. However, with our growing understanding of Climate Change and its impact on the earth’s environment, I would hope that your decisions to travel are weighed carefully based on need and importance. I see a disconnect in your long-held environmental positions, the City’s genuine environmental efforts and your carbon footprint.
