setting climate priorities for this year

Dear Members of the City Council,

I have decided to volunteer for Menlospark.org <http://menlospark.org/> because the looming climate crisis colors everything I do and see and read about. If we don’t help to mitigate this crisis, all other issues pale in comparison. But the only way I see to help is to act locally, even though I can see the global effects.

So I am asking you to keep this issue in the forefront as you define priorities for this year. It would help if you looked through the lens of climate change for every other project that you take on.

Thus, for example, transitioning away from fossil fuels for City activities is an excellent goal. More subtle, and equally important, is working on infrastructure that will lessen the need for use of fossil fuels in the first place, such as Menlo Together’s goal of placing affordable housing near transit and services; and “a policy requiring all new buildings [to] be Zero Carbon and Fossil Free.”

I celebrate my 2 1/2-year-old grandson’s growth and development, a miraculous flowering every few days—and I mourn to think that this world of forests and birds, of rain and seasons, of Arctic tundra and coral reefs, of all the ordinary beauty right here in my neighborhood that I see that still remains, may no longer be available to him and those of his generation. We must have a world for them to grow up in and act in, a world where they too can contribute to bringing about a sustainability where we live, locally, and at large.

Thank you.
