No on Alternative A

Please consider my views on Alternative A as you deliberate.

  * Alternative A, the plan currently favored by City Council, would eliminate vehicle access to Alma St. from Ravenswood Ave., forcing all traffic through the neighborhood onto Laurel St., thereby increasing traffic and decreasing safety and quality of life.
  * Alma St. is wide and has both bike lanes and sidewalks, creating a safe environment for cars, bikes, and pedestrians to coexist. It doesn’t make sense to cut off car access to this street.
  * Laurel St. has no bike lanes but is a major route for bicyclists, especially kids to and from school. The narrow sidewalks are immediately adjacent to the street; pedestrians frequently spill over into the street. It doesn’t make sense to intentionally increase car traffic on this street.
  * Remember effects of trial closure of Alma St. in 2015: traffic on Laurel St. grew significantly worse in both speed and volume. We’ve already seen what Alternative A would do to Laurel St. Let’s learn from that experience instead of repeating it.
  * A better “build” option for grade separation is Alternative C. A better “non-build” option is a traffic signal with train preemption at Alma / Ravenswood. Both of these options would maintain car access to Alma St. from Ravenswood, keeping Laurel St. safer.
  * Currently there is no representative on City Council dedicated to District 3, which includes Linfield Oaks. It is not appropriate for City Council to make a decision that would severely and negatively impact Linfield Oaks’ neighborhood safety and quality of life without a dedicated representative.
