1000 El Camino Real giant redwood tree removal

Dear Menlo Park City Council -  Seven giant coast redwoods at 1000 El Camino Real are posted (as of Dec 13) for removal because of 'Property Damage'.  There has been no coverage of this radical proposal in the Almanac,  a Google search turns up no relevant notification and I could not find  information on the city web site.
Please DELAY any action on these trees until city residents understand what is going on.  What is the claimed property damage? Who requested the removal?  What other alternatives aside from tree removal have been considered?
If the only process possible for these  questions to be answered is formal appeal (with $200 fee), then accept this letter as my request for that. City offices are  closed this week, so the 15 day appeal would then expire this Friday, Dec 28. Hence I'm unsure just what city regulations imply in such a situation.
I'd appreciate a prompt reply regarding what action can be taken immediately.
