City Sidewalk Master Plan

I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify the action taken by the City Council at their February 13 meeting regarding the Sidewalk Master. The City Council approved the prioritization criteria for the installation of missing sections of sidewalk as part of the Sidewalk Master Plan. The purpose of the master plan is to provide the staff and City Council with a comprehensive list of sidewalk needs along with a prioritization mechanism that takes a number of criteria into consideration. Once this information is gathered the final list of locations will be placed into one of three categories: High, Medium, and low priority. The installation of missing sections of sidewalk within the high priority category will be the first sections considered for inclusion in future proposed budgets.

A number of emails have been received that indicated Woodland Street would be getting sidewalks as part of the Council's action Tuesday night. No specific areas or sidewalk projects were approved as part of the Council action.

Staff and City Council will have the flexibility to consider other factors in the review process such as community support and other key points that can be evaluated as part of the overall process.

I certainly understand the urgency neighborhoods are placing on the need for sidewalks but there are limited resources available to address this very important issue. The Side Walk Master Plan will provide the City with a comprehensive tool that can assist us in utilizing the limited resources efficiently and effectively. We are committed to completing the Master Plan in a timely manner in order to provide the information needed for the 2008/09 budget.
