Dear City Council Member,
You are invited to attend and support the International Women’s Day Celebration and Conference in San Jose, CA on Saturday March 8th, 2008 from 2pm to 7pm. This day’s program is presented by Amnesty International USA, Cardea Center for Women, and Kavosh Women’s Organization. Co-sponsoring are over a dozen other local women’s and human rights organizations as well as other community partners in the Bay Area.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Women’s Human Rights, Moving Beyond Barriers” with an emphasis on solutions. We will be celebrating individuals and groups who have moved us closer to gender justice around the globe. The  celebration will include dance performances choreographed by well-known Bay Area female artists, a women’s music concert, and art show. Keynote speaker, San Jose Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, will highlight issues relevant to women and human rights. Following will be a panel of distinguished women who will discuss the UN Convention of the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This upcoming March 8th is not only a celebration of women but an opportunity to raise awareness regarding women’s issues locally and globally. These global issues of violence, sexual apartheid, poverty, lack of access, and gender inequality are barriers to the social and economic advancement of women in every community. Our goals are to educate local communities of the barriers women still face and inspire individuals and groups to take action to bring about positive changes. Please join us in celebrating International Women’s Day and to bring together men and women to make a difference for the advancement of gender equality, peace, and human rights.
The event will take place at the Center for Employment Training (CET) in the SOTO Theater at
701 Vine Street, San Jose CA 95110. Parking is free on site. For more information please do not hesitate to contact me at 650-424-8110 Sincerely,
