Dear Mayor and Council,

The 56th IMCL Conference on A Healthy City for ALL will take place in Portland, Oregon, June 17-21. 2019. You are invited to beat the rush by proposing a presentation or a project for the design competition early.

This will be an enormously significant conference. We rejoice that many cities now are becoming more healthy by making great improvements in walkability, bikeability, public transit, and access to community places, nature and healthy food, as well as housing and neighborhood urban planning that supports social and ecological sustainability. We will hear from some of the best models around the world. Perhaps your city has something to share?

But the BIG challenge is that these goals are not reaching the population groups most in need. The poorest neighborhoods suffer the greatest health problems. Moreover, many cities face an unprecedented housing affordability crisis, gentrification, and increasing homelessness. We will hear from leading cities that are introducing innovative strategies to rein in housing commodification, and end homelessness! Please share what you are doing in your city.

We are putting together another phenomenal program of invited keynote speakers. Among them, I am thrilled to announce that Mayor Rui Moreira, of Porto, Portugal has enthusiastically confirmed his participation. He will be awarded the 2019 IMCL Joseph P. Riley Award for his emphasis on planning for equity, social cohesion and true democracy.

I look forward to receiving your proposal for a presentation, or a design for the competition, and hope to see you next year!

With best regards,

Suzanne
