Recommend Green Building Standards for All Municipal Projects, Including Libraries

Dear Mayor Ohtaki and Council Members,
As the City considers whether to rebuild the library, this is a good time to also consider the City’s green building policies. In keeping with the green building standards adopted several years ago for the Bayfront area, and continuing the City’s position on the leading edge of sustainability, we recommend a commitment to green building standards for all municipal buildings including 100% Renewable Energy or Zero Net Carbon.

Several libraries nearby have started a national trend as a showcase for green building, using the public space to show the benefits of sustainable practices. Most notably, The Stevens Library at the Sacred Heart School in neighboring Atherton was the first library in the U.S. to achieve Net Zero Energy Building Certification. Please find several detailed examples of sustainable library projects and their community benefits <https://drive.google.com/open?id=1jLJYjC0DYnkQ6Yq5vFHw2Xlxon1xUPdX> at this link<https://drive.google.com/open?id=1E-HhHVjb1nfhhaPEAPE3T4ZjoDpXoaiI>.<https://drive.google.com/open?id=1E-HhHVjb1nfhhaPEAPE3T4ZjoDpXoaiI>

We envision sustainable libraries as thriving community centers serving youth, seniors, and all residents in both Belle Haven and downtown. Designing libraries to meet modern green standards will help cut costs and create model learning spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Thank you for considering these comments.
Warm regards,
Diane Bailey
