Support for EQC request re Green Design Standards for Downtown Specific Plan + Sobering new Sea Level Rise Estimates

Dear Mayor Ohtaki and City Council Members,
I am writing in support of the Environmental Quality Commission request for the same environmental standards in place in the former M-2/Bayfront Area to be applied to developments in the Specific Plan Area downtown.

It’s more important now than ever to ensure that new developments minimize their carbon footprints, avoid fossil fuels like natural gas on site, and support electric vehicles and carbon free alternatives to driving. The City of Menlo Park did an excellent job including these sustainability elements in the December 2017 General Plan Update for the M2/Bayfront area. The rest of the city would benefit greatly from similar green standards.

The Almanac recently reported on San Mateo County’s Vulnerability Assessment<https://www.almanacnews.com/news/2018/04/14/sea-level-rise-could-cost-area-billions-countywide-study-finds> finding that sea level rise related to climate change could be from 1.5 to 5.5 feet by 2100, costing billions countywide. In Menlo Park, the mid-level estimate of a 100-year storm plus 3.3 feet of sea level rise by the end of the century, could cost $1.3 billion in property damage; impacting roughly 2,800 residents in Belle Haven and almost 3,000 acres of land.

We’re already feeling the impacts of climate change here, and future impacts are projected to be severe. At the same time, Menlo Park has a golden opportunity to show regional leadership on clean energy and green building standards. The City has already moved in that direction and we hope that continues.

Warm regards,
Diane Bailey
