MENLO PARK ART COMMISSION

Mayor Ohtaki and Council Members:

Please reconsider providing a Menlo Park Art Commission for the community.

Perhaps it is more important than ever to include within city activities an art program. Afterall, almost every city around you does this, and with increasing visibility.

Why do they do this - because it fills an important need. Art has the potential of providing many benefits. Art comes in many forms, such as painting, sculpture, dance, music, literature, poetry, theatre, film and so on.

Menlo Park should have no trouble in finding citizens to volunteer. This is a city that values art, but in many cases, are forced to seek it in other nearby cities, such as Palo Alto, Mountain View and San Jose to the south and Redwood City, San Carlos and San Francisco to the north. Why not in Menlo Park too?

The Parks and Recreation Commission has clearly stated that they do NOT have the bandwidth to take on this important roll. Years have gone by, and short of occasional discussions, no programs have been provided.

We have ONE UTILITY BOX decorated, which is great. Can a few more be provided this year?

Obviously, if the Art Commission meets quarterly at first, it would take minimal staff time. During their meetings a two year work plan could be developed for council consideration. As they say, "the time is now and the place is here".

Please place the item on the agenda for discussion. I have a high level of confidence that only good things can come of it.

Respectfully yours,

Jim Lewis
