Dear Menlo,
Happy New Year! All of us at the Outlet Program hope that you and yours had a wonderful Holiday Season. With the new year officially upon us, we are looking forward to an enjoyable and impactful 2008!
January will be a busy month for Outlet as we are scheduled to visit high schools and youth programs from Mountain View to Treasure Island--including a stop in the East Bay. We hope you enjoy this update on our activities and services as we closed out 2007.
Spanish Language Services Begin!
Outlet is very proud to announce that as of November 2007, we are officially bi-lingual! Our HIV Prevention and Education Coordinator, Rodrigo Garcia, launched a bi-weekly discussion group for gay, bi and trans Latino youth that is operated entirely in Spanish. As a fledgling program, attendance is small but interest is growing as word spreads about this unique group.
If you are a fluent Spanish-speaker and would like to volunteer as an advisor or community liason for the program, we'd LOVE your help. Please contact Rodrigo for details: rgarcia@chacmv.org [mailto:rgarcia@chacmv.org].
Outlet Trains Youth Leaders at Local Conference December 8th brought the annual Youth Empowerment Summit, a student-led conference hosted by San Francisco-based GSA Network. Hundreds of youth from the Bay Area and Northern California gathered to gain leadership skills, network with their peers, discuss safe school strategies, and celebrate being LGBTQ. Outlet was a proud supporter and participant in the conference, offering a workshop for students on organizing and moderating student speaker's panels.
More than 45 students attended Outlet's workshop, and participants learned techniques and guidelines for telling their coming out stories, how to create a balanced panel, strategies for encouraging teachers and administrators to schedule and support panels, and the important function of moderating a panel discussion.
Student reviews were incredible, and Outlet has continued to be a resource for youth attendees who live outside our area, as they engage their communities in the struggle for safer schools.
Outlet Holiday Party...Billiards Anyone?
Held December 19, 2007, Outlet's annual Holiday Party was a festive celebration. The party brought together youth, volunteer mentors, Steering Committee Members and old friends to celebrate the season and demonstrate pool cue prowess.
Of course, everyone was a winner on that Wednesday night as we celebrated with food and good conversation. The holiday party is another vehicle through which our youth get a glimpse into a successful, happy, and fulfilled future by interacting with Outlet's adult volunteers--not to mention getting great tips on dealing with extended family during the holidays. How many times can grandma ask if her lesbian granddaughter has a boyfriend? And, do you have to explain the WHOLE transition process to every distant cousin?
Luckily, Outlet youth have plenty of LGBTQ adults around to share their experiences and (often differing) opinions on family, religion, holidays, and being Out.
A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUTLET'S DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS!!!
THE LAST WORD... The New Year is traditionally marked with a listing of Resolutions. At Outlet, our Resolutions range from the serious (reach more youth who need our help), to the whimsical (paint the office a bright color--maybe RAINBOW!). If you are interested in helping us with either of our resolutions, just let us know--the more the merrier!
On behalf of the youth and staff at Outlet, thank you for your support--as a volunteer, supporter, friend or advocate. We are grateful for the dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by our community and we look forward to continuing our success in 2008.
For more information about Outlet services, training programs, volunteer opportunities, and ways to support us, please feel free to contact us at outlet@chacmv.org [mailto:outlet@chacmv.org]. Best wishes on your own resolutions and Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Shannon Turk
