The New Guild

Menlo Park City Council,

I’m writing to express my support for the Peninsula Arts Guild and their efforts to maximize the public benefit of The Guild Theater on El Camino Real. My family and I live at 1303 Johnson Street and have been residents of Menlo Park for 14 years. We walk to The Guild from our home when the theater is showing movies that interest us, often having dinner in downtown before or after the show. Given the steady rise of streaming video and its impact on the movie exhibition business, we understand that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, for smaller, single-screen movie theaters to survive. Rather than having The Guild close and the building sit vacant becoming another “eyesore” along El Camino Real, we would welcome having a multi-use venue with music, comedy, film, and other artistic performances. We feel that this type of use would be a fantastic ”add” to our town, would help to activate our downtown core, and would create additional business for the restaurants, cafes, etc. in Menlo P
ark. Further, the relative small size of the theater and evening performance times, which generally do not occur during peak traffic, would not create an undue burden on the neighborhood immediately adjacent to The Guild.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider this wonderful potential enhancement to our community.

Best Regards,

Jeff Berkes
