Re: potential library expansion's impact on children's center

Dear Council Members/Library Commissioners,

It recently came to my attention that the Menlo Park Library is looking to expand. It is also with complete surprise that I learned that one of the potential expansion sites is on the location where the current Menlo Children Center is located.

I am extremely disappointed that no one has reached out to us, parents, to alert us to a potential displacement. I would like to stress how disruptive this would be for the children and for the working parents who use this facility. I very much oppose a one-sided decision by either library commission or city council without reaching out to the people who will be mostly affected by such a move.

Menlo Children Center has been a major reason why my wife and I personally decided to move to Menlo Park when we graduated from Stanford campus. We've been Menlo Park residence for just over a year, but the rich public/civic resource and the sense of community around us left very positive impressions and great appreciation of the city. Even after my workplace has moved out of Menlo Park, replacing a pleasant walking distance with a 35mi daily commute, I'm staying happy in Menlo Park and will probably do so for the many years to come, finding a lot of personal values shared with the city/community.
I understand the library expansion project is needed, timely, opportune, and would benefit the broader community in the long run. However, should the expansion of the library disrupt Menlo Children’s Center and After School program, I would urge you to consider the impact on the current and future families as well as staffs depending on it. I hope to see a detailed plan including how the Children Center would be relocated and the programs could be continued as part of the relevant siting option of the library expansion project. I'm afraid many parents and families, including ourselves, would remain strongly opposed unless there's a concrete and clear plan that can provide assurance.
