Stanford El Camino Project & MPCSD Funding

Dear City Council Members,

Does anyone else find it ironic that Stanford, an educational institution, is bargaining to underfund its own residents’ students from the new Stanford El Camino Development? The most recent offer still shortchanges its own residents’ students by 6 figures and only covers partial costs for 15 years.  Will students stop attending the Menlo Park City School District (MPCSD) district after 15 years? Probably not.

Here’s another idea. The MPCSD will know exactly the number of students from this Stanford El Camino Residential Development each year.  When families register to attend the MPCSD schools, they have to provide proof of residence in the school district. Through a contract between Stanford and Menlo Park, Stanford could agree to pay the difference to fully fund each student from this development, the portion of property taxes that would normally go to the School District. That way, Stanford would not overpay or underpay. They would just pay for the students that attend the MPCSD schools for that year.
The Stanford has done a lot of great things with research and education.  I hope Stanford will continue to invest in the education of its community.        Thank you for your consideration of citizens' input.
Sincerely,Charles PreussMenlo Park Resident
