Middle Ave

My name is Lauren Carter, I am a resident of Menlo Park and an employee at nearby LPCH. I wanted to email the council to voice some of my concerns, specifically the speed at which people drive on Middle Ave.

I moved to Menlo Park this past year and have been appalled at the lack of concern drivers have for pedestrians, bikers and children in general. Cars routinely speed on small side streets, text on phones and very rarely stop at stop signs or crosswalks. Several times, I have had cars speed around my vehicle when I am making a full stop at a stop sign. I do not feel safe crossing the street or biking in this city. I have lived in 10 different cities in my lifetime, commuted by bike in most of them and have never felt this unsafe.

I commute to work by bike and often feel extremely concerned for my own safety, as well as the safety of many small children trying to commute by walking or biking to school on what is ironically called a "bike safety corridor." I do not have children of my own, but after commuting by bike here as an adult, I would never let a child bike in this area. I often have to help children cross the street in the morning because no car will stop for them at the crosswalks. I have witnessed a woman with a stroller who was almost hit by a car that sped around her as she was crossing Middle Ave by the park. Drivers use Middle Ave as a thoroughfare and often drive speeds that are appropriate for a freeway.
I think the new bike lanes near DTMP are great and I think it is wonderful to be part of a biking community. I believe both bikers and drivers should follow the rules of the road.
Is there a way to increase police presence or take other, smaller measures to make our streets safer? Add more stop signs (specifically one on Middle Ave at Fremont street as the road is next to a park that many children play at)? I know this topic has come up before in meetings and I would be interested to hear about any current safety initiatives.

I would be more than willing to volunteer my time to help with this. Please let me know how I can help.

I sincerely thank you for your time,

Lauren Carter
