nice bike lane

This photo was taken Thursday noon 2 blocks east of Hillview School, an hour before hoards of middle school kids head home on their bikes. In their youthful enthusiasm and exuberance the boys (why is it always boys?) will ride 2-3-4 abreast, a tradition here that goes back at least several decades. Well good luck with that. Even without the garbage containers presenting the obvious obstacle, the lane is simply too narrow. Kids will end up riding into traffic or riding the gutter. And scraping a pedal on the steep concrete side can topple them in an instant, and few of them wear helmets. It is impossible for the garbage trucks to returnĀ allĀ the containers to an upright position, and even if they do, the wind can topple them into the bike path. I don't know what to suggest, but I know that the redesign of the street could have made it a lot wider by utilizing the entire city right of way, using city property for the safety of the city, and especially its kids. I'd like to see the Council address this before some kid gets killed.
