Coleman and Santa Monica - Delayed Again, Not Ok

Dear City Council Members,

Per Staff Report 17- 201-CC, "2nd Quarter Update on 2017 City Council Work
Plan," the Willows Neighborhood Complete Streets Project will be delayed
due to staff vacancies. While perhaps some cut through traffic concerns
could be postponed (debatable), the situation during peak school commute
hours at Coleman Avenue and Santa Monica Avenue must be addressed
*immediately*. The new crosswalk at this location is appreciated, but it
does not come close to addressing the dangers at this intersection.

This morning, I took my 7 year old son and 9 year old daughter to this
intersection to wait for the yellow school bus to Lower Laurel and Upper
Laurel respectively. While I am used to the terrible traffic situation at
this location, there were some new kindergarten families watching the
interaction of bikes, peds, school buses and cars for the first time. They
were horrified. Seeing the intersection through their fresh eyes reinforced
my resolve that the current conditions are unacceptable and pose an
immediate safety risk.

You must take action right away at this location. At a minimum some "in the
meantime" mitigation efforts should include a crossing guard/police officer
at peak school hours. I realize that the City has not historically funded
crossing guards. That argument is irrelevant. Either you fund it, or
convene a stakeholder meeting right away to figure out a funding/insurance
source. Perhaps parents, school districts, police and the City (or others)
can pitch in to fund this. You must take the lead. You must do this right

In addition, due to staffing constraints, I urge you to unbundle this
corridor from the Willow Complete Streets project. Coleman and Santa Monica
can not wait indefinitely for help. Do something.

I invite each and every one of you to come to Coleman and Santa Monica at
8am on a Monday, Tuesday or Friday (these are the days when the M-A kids
have an earlier bell schedule and they interact with the Laurel families).
Come see for yourself.

Thank you,

*Jen Wolosin*
