Arrillaga Proposal to Build a New Library

Dear Mayor Keith and City Councillors:

The proposed new library that John Arrillaga has offered substantial funds for, is a fantastic gift to the people of Menlo Park. I know there are some community members who feel that the primary project should be to build a library in Belle Haven. We do need to build a Belle Haven Library and the Council has approved and funded a Needs Study to determine where a library could be built and what it should look like. This will take some time and we at the MP Library Foundation know from the experience we have just had getting the Space Needs Study funded and completed; about three years minimum. Also, Belle Haven doesn't have an actual site to work with. That all has to be determined and it will be. In the meantime, we can build a new main library.

Mr. Arrillaga was asked if he would fund a library in Belle Have instead of the Civic Center and he said no. He has built the gym, the other recreational building and now the Library, all in the Civic Center, and that is the area he is interested in improving. That is his decision and refusing his offer is not going to make building a new Belle Haven library happen any sooner and we will have two libraries to build and have far less money to work with.

Belle Haven needs a library but we can do both of these projects. Also with all that Facebook and other developers are doing in Belle Haven, the Belle Haven library, once we know what it should look like and where it should be, could possibly be used as a negotiating piece that we encourage developers to help fund.

The main library could be built before the Belle Haven library is ready to be started. We shouldn't turn away Arrillaga's generous gift and his experience building projects in order to do a Belle Haven Library first. We need to do both. We support taking the next steps towards completing this project.
