Caltrain construction coming to a theatre near you

There is an assumption among most of us that once a railroad is constructed, it is there forever and only the construction requires big investments. That's not true. Like most infrastructure, railroads deteriorate and require not only regular maintenance as part of the ongoing operation, they require periodic replacement of ballast, ties and rail. Bridges also need constant attention and costly reconstruction, as we have painfully learned recently in the Midwestern bridge collapse.

San Bruno's experience is a micro example of what we would be in for, over not a weekend, but three years, if grade separation construction come to our neighborhood theatre. Repair can be done one track at a time; what we will experience is the building of new four-track bridges and rail-beds throughout Menlo Park.

Caltrain work causes weekend street closure By Christine Morente, STAFF WRITER

SAN BRUNO - Angus Avenue will be closed off this weekend as Caltrain crews work to continue replacing the railroad grade crossing.

The street - between First and Huntington avenues - will close starting at 8 a.m. Friday and reopen at 8 a.m. Monday.

Caltrain officials ask that motorists and pedestrians use San Bruno Avenue to get around the construction.

According to Caltrain spokesman Jonah Weinberg, the railroad crossing is at the end of its lifespan.

"It happens every 15 years," he said. "We're constantly going up and down our tracks, making sure everything is in working order." Last weekend, crews replaced worn asphalt, rails, ties and ballast on the northbound track and improved drainage.

This weekend, the southbound tracks will be worked on. There will be new paving adjacent to the tracks for a smoother crossing surface for cars, Weinberg said.

Weekend train service will not be interrupted. Passengers for the northbound and southbound trains will board from the same platform.

Also, for people living near the San Bruno station, expect some construction noise in the evening. There will be portable light towers powered by a diesel generator.
