OUTSPOKEN
e-News for Friends of the Outlet Program
November 2007
Dear Menlo,
Welcome to OUTSPOKEN, the e-Newsletter for friends and supporters of the Outlet Program. In an effort to keep our community informed, we have created this brief sampling of our activities and services from the past month. We hope you enjoy this peek into the Outlet window!
OUTLET GOES TO OREGON! Job Corps Logo [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001cMLU66jkM1SYsvs44kVuzl-JxEoDdy6AKyAuihcQI9VOs5TAR5Jg8sGcZxMQr5M1mLHNiUNNbOncTHEDgG8_8cZ_rhXna0pO28dWRGywuCnz32Y4taK8KA==] On September 6th, the Outlet Program ventured into new territory, as we completed our first diversity and sensitivity training outside of California! In early 2007, Outlet developed a partnership with the Western Region of Job Corps, a Department of Labor education and vocational job training program for disadvantaged youth ages 16-24.
The Job Corps site at Timber Lake, Oregon (60 miles east of Portland) recently received an application from a student who identifies as transgendered. Job Corps hired Outlet to visit their Oregon facility and work with student leaders and staff on creating a safe environment for their LGBTQ students (including the new applicant).
While the two workshop sessions comprised of some of the toughest crowds we have ever faced, by the end of the day we witnessed several "AH-HA!" moments in the eyes of the students and staff. As one young man stated, "It's like the same thing as when people find out I am an ex-con. They move away from me, all afraid. They judge me and they don't even know who I am. I hate it when they do that, and that must be what it's like for gay people." Outlet continues to consult with the Timber Lake facility to ensure that LGBT students on campus receive the support and resources they need.
FALL DANCE SETS RECORD! sister barbie [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001cMLU66jkM1SYsvs44kVuzl-JxEoDdy6AKyAuihcQI9VOs5TAR5Jg8sGcZxMQr5M1mLHNiUNNbOncTHEDgG8_8cZ_rhXna0pO28dWRGywuCnz32Y4taK8KA==] On October 19, Outlet and the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center co-sponsored a dance for local LGBTQQ youth and straight allies. Demonstrating that two heads are better than one, the joint effort was a tremendous success, with a record number 166 youth in attendance.
In addition to dancing the night away, the youth participated in a Fashion Show/Drag Show to highlight HIV/AIDS Awareness and the rising numbers of infections among youth.
Special thanks go out to the DeFrank Center for making this a joint effort and to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for their amazing support and help with the dance.
BUILDING LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS PFLAG logo [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001cMLU66jkM1SYsvs44kVuzl-JxEoDdy6AKyAuihcQI9VOs5TAR5Jg8sGcZxMQr5M1mLHNiUNNbOncTHEDgG8_8cZ_rhXna0pO28dWRGywuCnz32Y4taK8KA==] As the only comprehensive resource for LGBTQQ youth on the Peninsula, Outlet is constantly seeking out partnerships and collaborations to ensure that our youth and our community have access to all of the services, information, and resources possible.
In preparation for the national PFLAG conference in Washington, DC in October, Outlet proudly partnered with PFLAG San Jose/Peninsula to create a "Cook Book"--a step-by-step guide for grass roots organizations looking to create LGBT Speakers Bureaus. Outlet and PFLAG are two organizations in our area who provide trained speakers and panels to educate students, teachers, businesses, nonprofits, and youth service organizations on the issues faced by LGBTQ people and their families.
Outlet is also working with an new organization for parents connected to the Gunn High School community in Palo Alto. Named the Gunn LGBT Parent Network, the group is comprised of LGBT parents and the parents of LGBT children working together to support the Gay-Straight Alliance Club, as well as generally promote safety, equality, and acceptance on campus. The group has already scored a big victory for the community--securing the announcement, "October is LGBT History Month", on the electronic sign in front of the school.
For more information on these groups or Outlet's other local partnerships, please feel free to contact the Outlet office at outlet@chacmv.org [mailto:outlet@chacmv.org] or 650-965-2020.
THE LAST WORD... Outlet is proud to be a thriving program, empowering LGBTQQ youth and educating the community. We are passionate about our work and we invite you to join us in the on-going effort to embrace and celebrate the next generation of LGBTQ leaders.
We greatly appreciate the dedication of the entire Outlet family--we owe our successes and impact to your support. For more information on Outlet programs and services, or to become more involved as a volunteer, please feel free to contact us at outlet@chacmv.org [mailto:outlet@chacmv.org] or 650-965-2020.
Best wishes to you and your loved ones on the eve of the 2007 holiday season.
Sincerely,
Shannon Turk

OUR FAVORITE QUOTES "Outlet is my community. It is my home. Other students find where they fit in high school--I fit at Outlet, these are my people."
--18 year-old gay male
"Your workshop was VERY helpful. You didn't shield us from the harsh realities of the brutality that goes on. It was a good way to open up our minds to how much our society really needs to be more accepting!" -Sophomore at Gunn High School

"A lot of youth talk about moving out and moving on after graduation. I am just coming back. And I will ALWAYS come back. Outlet is my safe place. There is no judgment here-for who I am or what I have done. I am whole here, I am my best here."
--21 year old lesbian female
WE WANT YOUR INPUT! The Staff, Steering Committee, and youth at Outlet are currently working on a Strategic Plan and we want your feedback! In 2007, Outlet celebrated 10 YEARS of empowering LGBTQQ youth and educating the community. We are now looking forward to the next ten years of service.
WHAT DOES THE WORLD LOOK LIKE IN 2018? How do people interact? What is day-to-day life like for you, your family, your colleagues? What services do people need in the nonprofit space?
WHAT DOES THE WORLD LOOK LIKE FOR LGBTQQ YOUTH IN 2018? How do they interact (with other youth, with their parents)? What are critical issues in their daily lives?
We are entertaining these questions in order to investigate the evolving needs of LGBTQQ youth. If you have ideas or input on the status of our community and culture in 2018, please give us a shout at outlet@chacmv.org [mailto:outlet@chacmv.org]!
