MENLO PARK ART COMMISSION

Honorable Mayor and Council Members:

When the Mayor said the other day that it would be entirely appropriate and timely to re-establish the MENLO PARK ART COMMISSION, it couldn't have been a more appropriate statement that was MUSIC TO MY EARS.

It has been far too long that Menlo Park has been without an established, dedicated and devoted group focused on this important cultural program. With the Menlo Park Art Commission already found in the Municipal Code, a former website with tons of history and background information, it may take little more than the City Council taking time to appoint seven new members. I would suspect the City will have NO PROBLEM finding and selecting members of the community with a keen interest in this topic.

As you know, ART COMES IN MANY FORMS, such as music, sculpture, dance, literature, theatre, poetry and so on. Art has the potential to enrich our lives and bring new prospective. It can add life, appreciation and education lifting one's spirits and passion in many ways. I cannot imagine a community without art.

Cities to the north of Menlo Park and cities to the south of Menlo Park almost without exception have an active ART PROGRAM. Searching further, cities and counties throughout the state and across the nation have active and focused art programs. Why do they provide this to their communities...... because it works.

If you too are passionate about art and see its important role in our community, then I urge you to include openings on this Commission with your next vacancy posting. I look forward to the day when this becomes a reality. I believe you will be pleased with their workplan bringing a fresh and new meaning to the words "art in Menlo Park". If I can be of assistance in this regard, please let me know.

Respectfully,

Jim Lewis
