Ravenswood Railroad Crossing without the temporary rail bypass (shoofly)

I attended last night’s community meeting on the RavenswoodRailroad Crossing Project. It was wellrun and I was pleased to see the success of the team’s outreach, which broughtin many residents who had not previously participated.

The most important information from the Q&A discussion isthat the Shoofly, or temporary bypass railroad line, is NOT necessary in the alternativefor Ravenswood at the current rail level. This is a huge project option that should be pursued aggressively andpresented to the City Council.

Designing the construction phases so the temporary railbypass is not built for the current rail grade level means that the other twounderpasses can be built at any time, i.e., the choice facing the Menlo Park isno longer binary (1 vs. 3 underpasses) and the impact on properties adjacent tothe railroad is substantially reduced.
