Thank you! + spillover mitigation

Dear Cat, Kirsten, Peter, Ray, and Rich,

I just wanted to send you a quick note to thank you for your ongoing
support of Complete Streets and the thoughtful leadership you all showed in
the recent discussions about the Oak Grove bike boulevard pilot. It has
been a tough series of conversations but in the end I think we are all
looking for the same thing: a better/safer option for the kids and adults
who bike to and through the heart of our town (to shop, to commute, to go
to school, etc.)

As long as we can anticipate and plan for the inevitable negative
externalities, I have hope that this pilot will be a solid step in the
direction of making Menlo Park a more bike- and pedestrian-friendly
community.

I do think that we need to address the extant parking challenges on Pine
and Marcussen Streets, which are sure to worsen with the pilot. It sounds
like we've got a public safety hazard on Pine St. (fire trucks can't get
through when there's parking on both sides of the street) and Marcussen,
lacking sidewalks, becomes unsafe when people are parking on both sides.
I've spoken with a few different Marcussen residents and gotten the sense
that even limiting parking to one side of the street–or setting up time
limits (2-3 hrs)–would help. Hope our staff can look into this before we
launch the bike route.

With gratitude,

Katie
