Please Move Forward with the Oak Grove Bike Pilot

Dear Mayor Keith and City Council Members,
Please move forward with the approved Oak Grove Bike Pilot. The safety of students going to school is at stake. They need a safe crossing on El Camino Real to and from M-A High and Hillview Middle School. They also need safe bike lanes, which have benefits across the community:

  * Parents can avoid extra trips shuttling their kids to school;
  * Fewer parents shuttling and separate lanes for bikers cuts traffic and allows drivers and bicyclists to travel safely with less stress of potential conflict or accidents;
  * Fewer car trips not only cuts traffic but also cuts air pollution and carbon emissions improving sustainability for everyone;
  * Safe bike routes to school foster independence for youth, as well as healthy exercise that helps students arrive to school in an energized way, ready to learn; and
  * Piloting bike lanes allows for corrections and adjustments to optimize the roadway use for safety and convenience.

The Oak Grove Bike Pilot project has been thoroughly vetted and publicized. It deserves a fair chance to move forward as planned for the safety of children as a priority. For anyone who may be inconvenienced by restricted parking, we urge MA High, area churches, institutions, and neighbors to collaborate to reduce student parking in busy areas such as daycare drop off zones.

I appreciate the thoughtful debate on this issue, and the hard work of staff, commissioners, and parent advocates.
