Downtown Parking

Dear Council Members,
As a Menlo Park resident I would like to voice my thoughts on the current and future parking situation in the downtown area.

At one time citizens were faced with limited parking time and over zealous enforcement.  Fortunately there has been marked improvement in both of those areas.  However, with those problems addressed a new one has developed, the lack of parking spaces.  With the elimination of multiple parking places for the new on-street restaurant dining patios, finding parking during weekday business hours is extremely difficult.
I have now learned of the proposal to eliminate even more parking to accommodate bicycle travel on some of our key thoroughfares in the downtown area.  In my opinion this is unnecessary and a very bad idea. From talking to resident and non-resident visitors to downtown, I'm aware that the lack of parking is causing people to make multiple orbits around blocks in search of a parking spot.  A frustrated motorist searching for a parking spot can be an unsafe motorist.

I live in the downtown area and do a great deal of walking there and, with one exception, I fail to see an overwhelming amount of bicycle traffic that would warrant sacrificing parking spots for bicycles.  The exception I constantly see is the downtown Santa Cruz Ave. corridor at approximately 3:00 PM on school days.  If they are not illegally riding on the sidewalks, students carelessly speed down the traffic lanes oblivious to vehicles backing out of the diagonal parking slots.  Assuming there is one, a police department school liaison officer should meet with students and address that problem.
For the sake of our merchants and citizens who patronize those merchants, I vehemently oppose the elimination of any more parking in the downtown area.

Thank you for your consideration,
Ron Johnson6 Versailles St.Menlo Park
