In favor of sanctuary ordinance (was: Please postpone sanctuary city vote)

Dear Council Members,

After making the request below, I was disappointed to find that I have
to be out of town starting this evening, and so will miss the
rescheduled meeting.

Please take this note in lieu of a comment in person: I urge adoption of
the sanctuary resolution because I feel that we must stand up for the
immigrant population on whom we depend, and who live among us as our
neighbors. I am not advocating breaking federal laws, only that the city
draw a line at strict compliance and no more, and in particular that
city officials not support any effort towards deporting anyone who has
not been shown to be a danger to our community.

The Trump administration-- in the actions of its short life so far-- has
been recklessly willing to stir up racial, national, and religious
hatred. On these grounds alone our community should hold the
administration at arm's length and question its authority and moral
legitimacy, and its competence as a steward of our democratic
institutions. Beyond that, of course, its actual legitimacy is in
question in the most straightforward and shocking way: if the worst
suspicions that have led to the current congressional investigations in
the election campaign should be proved true, charges of treason would

This is an administration which our city should have as little do with
as practically and legally possible. And at the same time, against this
lurid and menacing background, it is profoundly important that we stand
up for justice, decency and compassion. Enacting the sanctuary ordinance
would be a significant step towards these ends.

Yours sincerely,

Patrick Daly

I am strongly in favor of Menlo Park adopting such an ordinance, but I think it makes best sense to wait until the court decides whether the retaliation the Trump administration is threatening is legal.
