I Support Ordinance No 1034

I am writing to express my support for Ordinance 1034, Adding Chapter, 2.58
[Immigration and Sensitive Information] to Title 2 [Administration and
Personnel] of the Menlo park Municipal Code.

I have read the staff report 17-090-CC and find it to be a balanced
evaluation of the relationship the City should have with the federal
government's enforcement of U.S. immigration law. While it is true that
this issue may have been forced to the forefront of news by the present
presidential administration, the issue is still one which would be
deserving of a change to our municipal code.

Each council session begins with the Pledge of Allegiance, a pledge which
ends in the words "with liberty and justice for all." IT does not restrict
liberty and justice to just citizens, or to adults, or to people with a
certain skin color, or even criminals. All must be treated justly. And
while liberty and justice may sometime be at odds with one another, our
justice system of innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt
recognizes that the curtailment of liberty is an extraordinarily harsh
penalty in an of itself.

There are times when the pursuit of liberty comes with costs. In this case,
the federal government is threatening economic costs. I say so be it. We
will pursue righteousness and justice in the courts.

Regards,

steve taffee
