Bike Safety

Greetings all,

You may remember me well enough to know that I'm somewhat familiar
with the transportation issues our city faces. You may also remember that I'm
not an advocate of putting bike lanes everywhere, because of the impacts it
would have on said issues.

You may also remember my daughter Gigi, about whom I've spoken at a
number of City Council meetings.

Recently, we tried to ride our bikes to swim lessons. That's less
than a half mile as the crow flies from Allied Arts to Burgess Pool. Because
of the way things are laid out in our fair city, it's a bit longer than that.
Oh well, an extra bit of exercise never hurt anyone!

More to the point, I wouldn't wish that trip on anyone. There is no
safe way to get there. The trip is riddled with opportunities for even a
seasoned adult familiar with traffic to interact with cars, much less
children. Traffic is congested, drivers are impatient, there is no single
path through our city that is protected for bikes.

Bike lanes everywhere isn't practical, but we need bike lanes
*somewhere* to make it safe to cross our city.

Best Regards,
Kevin Sheehan
