Sanctuary City Ordinance: Please vote YES

  Dear Councillors,

As a Menlo Park resident, I feel that we should take a clear position as a
community that supports all of our residents. My primary view is as a
moral one, that we treat people with dignity and respect, and that the
decision to leave one's country and uproot one's life for the risk and
uncertainty of an international move is undertaken only with serious
consideration and no better options. Practically, our immigration policy
is broken, and until we have a system that addresses needs of refugees,
asylum seekers, temporary and permanent workers, plus the families that are
separated or face the risk of separation, we have no standing to deport
people who have lived productive, fulfilling lives as our neighbors. I
also fear that additional enforcement of immigration regulations will strip
residents (including those who are here with standing, but may have
relatives or housemates without) of their ability to report crime, get
needed help or protection. Finally, placing our own law enforcement
officers at the behest of federal policies and agencies is a loss of
control that may be abused in other situations as well.

I was proud to be present when you voted unanimously to file the amicus
curiae brief in March. I can't make it tomorrow night due to a conflict,
but I ask you to vote for our community at large, including some of those
with the least political power.
