Re: Support for Menlo Park joining Amicus Brief

Hello,

Thank you for your email. I have scheduled this topic for tonights City
Council agenda. Because the language of the Trump administration’s
Executive Order to withhold funds from “sanctuary” jurisdictions is so
ambiguous, it makes it hard for any jurisdiction to know whether it might
be viewed as a “sanctuary” by the federal government The result of this
ambiguity is that many jurisdictions, both conservative and liberal, do not
know if they might be targeted for defunding under this Executive Order.
This creates extreme uncertainty for their communities and in their ability
to make fiscal plans. Thus, I am recommending that the City of Menlo Park
join amicus briefs in support of both Santa Clara County and the City and
County of San Francisco in their litigation challenging the Trump
administration’s Executive Order. The broader topic of whether Menlo Park
should become a sanctuary city will be on the City Council agenda for its
meeting on April 4th. Again, thank you for your input on this important
topic.

Sincerely,

Kirsten Keith,

Mayor

Dear City Council Members,

My name is Abhijit Bhattacharya. My wife and I live at 1043 Henderson
Avenue. I am writing to express my support for the City joining the amicus
brief opposing Trump's Executive Order which aims to withhold federal
funding from sanctuary cities.

I grew up in California and I have spent most of my adult life here. I am
also the son of immigrant parents. I have been surrounded by undocumented
immigrants since my childhood in Los Angeles. Undocumented immigrants were
my friends, my classmates, and my teammates. Living in Menlo Park, we have
undocumented members of our community who are law-abiding community members
who have been here most of their lives. Trump's ruthless scapegoating of
our most vulnerable community members demonstrates his utter disregard for
the tolerance, charity, and unity that makes our country a shining example
to the world. Furthermore, his executive Order is an attempt to bully
cities into actions that are harmful to our relationship with the most
vulnerable in our community.

Please take action to defend civil rights in this time of crisis. Support
joining the amicus brief. Please defend our friends and neighbors who make
our community a diverse and wonderful place to live.

Sincerely,

Abhijit Bhattacharya and Taissa Kuncio
