human relation commission proposal

From: Nancy D. Wagner <"Nancy>

I would like to propose that the City of Menlo Park form a Human Relations Commission. City of Palo Alto has such a commission to address “..any human relations matter when the Commission find that any person or groups does not benefit fully from public or private opportunities or resources in the community, or is unfair or differently treated due to factors of concern to the Commission.” http://www.cityofpaloalto.org/gov/boards/hrc_bios/default.asp <http://www.cityofpaloalto.org/gov/boards/hrc_bios/default.asp>. The disparity in funding and services provided between East and West side of City of Menlo Park needs to be addressed. The facilities and hours of operations and programs offered at the Onetta Harris Community center in Belle Haven for example are not equitable to those on the West side of Menlo Park. The community center in Belle Haven is closed on weekends. The library in Belle Haven is not open until after 3pm on weekdays. The school facilities on the East Side of Menlo Park are also in need of equitable funding and development. The recent focus of the City Council and City Management has been to bring new development to the City of Menlo Park, and yet the development for City services to those who need it the most has been neglected. This effects our entire Menlo Park community, and it’s past due that improvement are made to human relations throughout the City of Menlo Park. Forming a Human Relations Commission would be a good start to improving human relations and equity in terms of City services provided throughout our City.
