4th police unit funding

Councilman Mueller, Chief Jonsen, members of the City Council:

We have lived in The Willows since 1998 and I attended yesterday’s city council meeting.  I listened to the presentation by Chief Jonsen and the exchange with Councilman Mueller regarding the potential dynamics created by the offer by Facebook to provide temporary funding for ramping up a 4th police unit in Menlo Park.

I fully appreciate Mr. Mueller’s perspective regarding possible undue influence from Facebook, or the appearance of it.  Personally, in this specific case, I am comfortable with Facebook’s offer.   From a practical perspective, any attempts to influence or to gain undue advantage could lead to significant negative public relations impact, and it would impact FB directly.   From a “fairness” perspective, the main reason behind the developments in that area is FB’s presence, so I see the funding as FB’s “fair” contribution to the changes they are creating in the area.

I wish the temporary funding had been considered as part of the development discussions but, since that phase has already ended, I think the offer is fair.  I would consider it only a temporary, bridge, solution until the revenue from the new development is available to pay for the funding.

Thanks for listening.
