No deportation deputies in Menlo Park

Dear City Council,

The Department of Homeland Security has called for "deputizing" local
police to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in its massive
round up of immigrants. Delegation of Immigration Authority is voluntary.
(Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act
https://www.ice.gov/factsheets/287g
<https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.ice.gov/factsheets/287g&sa=D&ust=1488222771989000&usg=AFQjCNE25bKgAXn_Bz6JAodqJqia9D4K4Q>
).

Menlo Park should not volunteer. We urge you to:

1. Issue a formal statement of policy that Menlo Park will not enter into
any Delegation of Immigration Authority agreements with the Department of
Homeland Security to deputize members of our police force to assist in
immigration enforcement.

2. Send a letter to the Secretary of Homeland Security advising him of your
position.

Securing and maintaining the trust of our local immigrant community is
essential for the safety of everyone who lives and works in Menlo Park. We
urge you to take these actions immediately.

Sincerely,

Sarah
