GOING, GOING, GONE

Honorable Mayor Keith and Council Members:

One of a city's greatest assets, is its Urban Forest.

The multi-year drought took a heavy toll in Menlo Park, as it did with our
neighboring cities. It's sad to see along with it potentially affecting the
quality of life with the many benefits that trees provide. Heritage trees
are amongst those that are gone - forever !

Given the importance of the urban forest to the entire community, that is
children, adults, business and government, I would hope and would
respectfully request, that the city of Menlo Park's website include an ongoing log of
trees cut down, removed and hauled away.

Yes, a notice is often posted on each tree, for the local neighbors to see.
However, the entire community has the right to know. If transparency is
more than a cute phrase, and has meaning and importance, having such a log,
or spreadsheet ONLINE is important.

The EQC receives a periodic report on trees REMOVED, however, when a tree
is proposed to be removed, and a notice is posted on or near the tree, then
AHEAD OF TIME, for all to see, consider and have the right to view and
comment on, should be on this ongoing, transparent and very visible list.

It is my understanding that staff will be more than happy to do this with
your guidance and approval. Kindly take a moment to consider this humble
request, for after all, as summed up by James Kilmer (1886-1918) in the poem
Trees, he states "Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a
tree".

Respectfully,

Jim Lewis
