Data

Hi again,

Here is some data to show the need for Safe Routes:

*Traffic Related to Schools*
10-14% of morning traffic congestion per National Safe Routes:
http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/program-tools/what-percentage-
morning-traffic-congestion-caused-children-being-driven-school
Jessica Garner from San Mateo County Get Healthy, wrote, "I just checked
with our Epidemiologist, and the data source you have is fine to use. We
don't have any immediate information on San Mateo County, but we're
thinking the percentages are probably pretty similar to the national
survey."

*Decrease in Traffic as a result of Safe Routes:*
Neither San Mateo County, nor Palo Alto has exact stats (though Jessica
Garner said she can add it to a list of data stats to look at), but Palo
Alto has bike counts at schools over time (as a result of their City's
prioritization of Safe Routes). If you make some assumptions/calcuations
about how many car trips reduced by how many bicycles are added...you can
see the positive impact to the larger traffic problems that Safe Routes can
have.

*Collision Data:*
39% of bike and ped collisions in SMC are within 1/4 mile of schools. And
it's even higher in "Daly City, RWC/Menlo Park, and San Mateo." (per
Jessica Garner). And see report below:

Thank you.
