Information and thoughts from a public meeting about Stanford's 2018 General Use Permit Application

Hello MP City Council,

I attended a meeting held on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Palo Alto's Mitchell
Park Community Center. I believe I may have been the only person from Menlo
Park that asked a question (but someone from MP may have asked a question
but didn't identify themselves. Also it is not too surprising since the
focus is on Palo Alto and Santa Clara County) but there may have been other
MP citizens in attendance. There were a number of takeaways from it that I
thought you may find interesting.

* The plans show 550 beds planned (out of a planned 3,150 total beds) in a
small triangular area that is bordered by ECR, Quarry Road and another line
that is about half-way to one-third between Quarry Road and Palm Drive.

Look at numbered page 17 of the pamphlet from this website (which shows it
is page 19 of 36 as the PDF numbers the cover and inside page).

* In the same area 200,000 square feet of Academic & Support building is
proposed (out of 2.275 million).

* Stanford to provide $56 million for affordable housing projects in the
region. But I suspect a large portion could be on the campus since the
rate it charges qualifies them as affordable.

* No new net automobile commute trips to the campus.

I talked to Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian and he suggested I
pass along my thoughts (which I was going to do anyways) to make sure you
and MP City Staff are involved with this project now when it is easier to
provide input and potentially affect any changes.

This is the main website for the General Use Permit.

There is an EIR input session scheduled for Wednesday, February 8th, at 6
pm at Palo Alto Arts Center auditorium. Hopefully someone from MP's City
Council or Staff is planning to attend or can if it isn't on anyone's
schedule.

I asked the question if Stanford was talking with Menlo Park and San Mateo
County and they said yes. I didn't ask for any specific contacts so this
may be well covered but I didn't want to assume this.

Good luck,
Chuck
