Dear Mayor Keith and City Council Members,
Thank you for starting 2017 with the high priority issue of housing displacement. We appreciate your efforts to address this regional and local issue and assist vulnerable residents.

Access to safe and affordable housing is a fundamental element of a sustainable community. We support diverse housing for mixed income levels creating a more a cohesive and vibrant community. In particular areas with good access to public transit, such as downtown, make excellent sites for additional affordable housing. One promising opportunity for additional affordable housing is through the use of existing city-owned land. For example, parking structures replacing surface lots can make space for retail or civic uses at ground level and dwelling units above. Additionally, relaxing the parking minimums for new affordable housings is a smart way to lower the cost of these much needed developments and recognize the value of transit-oriented developments.

Consideration of the housing measures in the staff report is a great step towards addressing the housing crisis that many members of our community are experiencing.
