November Updates & Announcements
Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment

The Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment is currently in the internal review process. County staff and the internal Project Management Team (PMT) are reviewing the "Administrative Draft". The County SLR team sent out the technical pieces, including the exposure maps, asset inventory and asset vulnerability profiles to cities for a pre-review. We will receive and evaluate the city feedback from the technical pieces in early November. We will be releasing the Public Draft for review by cities and other stakeholders as soon as possible, and likely in late November/ early December. We estimate the final Vulnerability Assessment (VA) will be complete in early 2017. Please note the tentative timeline of the Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment below.

Look Ahead - San Mateo

Since the launch of the Look Ahead project on August 4th, our virtual reality viewers have had a total of 2,945 sessions! Bring your friends, family, and co-workers to a hosted viewing session. At each event, visitors can ask questions and speak with project team about the visualizations and sea level rise impacts. Check out the "Events" section below for the session dates.

Focus Group Study
Thank you to all the volunteers that participated in the Look Ahead - San Mateo focus group study. From October 18- 22, researchers Dr. Susanne Moser and Christa Daniels organized focus groups at Coyote Point Recreation Area to understand various stakeholders' reactions to the viewer's visualizations of sea level rise. Participants of the focus groups were elected officials, community members, and city staff. The study gained the stakeholders' input of what adaptation should look like in the County.

The researchers are currently evaluating the data and will have the results completed in 2017. We will send any new updates regarding the focus group study results.

Berkeley Student Viewer Event
Early in October, the SLR team gave a group of Berkeley students from the School of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning an introduction to SeaChange and the infrastructural challenges in the area. Avana Andrade, SLR team member, interviewed two Berkeley students about the key aspects that make sea level rise challenging in this area and why collaboration is so essential. Listen to their brief (~ 2 min) thoughts below:
* Regional Collaboration (http://seachangesmc.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=40c74669d3d70d2d21ece795a&id=da7f7c3edb&e=6fa0fac571)
* Bring Visible Things Into Focus (http://seachangesmc.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=40c74669d3d70d2d21ece795a&id=82f7dadfb3&e=6fa0fac571)

California King Tides Project
The California King Tides Project help people visualize how sea level rise will impact their lives. The King Tides Project document "king tides" (the highest high tides) using smartphones and social media to record the changes to our coasts and shorelines. But most importantly, the king tides images give a glimpse of what a daily tide may look like in the future as a result of sea level rise. Get involved, spread the word, and be part of the King Tides Project!

Mark your calendars for the following king tides dates:
* November 13 - 16, 2016
* December 13 and 14, 2016
* January 10, 11, and 12, 2017

Guide to set up king tides photo shoot:
1. Find the king tides location in your neighborhood using this map (http://seachangesmc.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=40c74669d3d70d2d21ece795a&id=e9da93ac8f&e=6fa0fac571) .
2. Remember to be aware of your surroundings and take extra precaution near slippery areas or near big waves.
3. Include any shore birds that may take refuge in areas above the tide line!
4. Lastly, take note of the time, date, location and orientation of your photos or use geolocation service on your phone (if available).
5. Then post your images to the California King Tides Photo Initiative flickr group (http://seachangesmc.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=40c74669d3d70d2d21ece795a&id=31468de88a&e=6fa0fac571) !

The Strategy to Advance Flood protection, Ecosystems and Recreation along San Francisco (SAFER) Bay Project completed their Public Draft Feasibility Report. The report evaluates the flood protection alternatives along the San Francisco Bay shoreline. Check out New York City's new flood risk website! The website features an interactive flood map that helps New Yorkers see how their neighborhoods will be affected by future flood zones. The new FloodHelpNY.org (http://seachangesmc.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=40c74669d3d70d2d21ece795a&id=cd7ba869a9&e=6fa0fac571) was created as a platform for engaging and informing New York City homeowners about how they can protect their home and finances from flooding that is expected to worsen with rising sea levels caused by climate change.
