Can we please clean up the garbage?

Hello Richard, Kirsten, Peter, Ray and Catherine,

My name is Monica Montefiore. I am a relatively new and extremely proud
resident of Belle Haven in Menlo Park. And as much as I love coming home to
this peaceful neighborhood, I am disgusted by the spectacle that is the
Willow Road East exit off the 101. I don't know how long it has been this
way, but this is one of the worst kept stretches of roadway that I have
ever witnessed.

I've attached 2 of over 20 photos I took on August 31. I have never seen so
much garbage on a road in my life. It has become a literal dumping ground
for people's refuse. Tonight I saw what looked like a piece of a windshield
on the right hand side of the Willow East off ramp. One of the images I've
attached shows a baby stroller sitting atop a large pile of other household
items just a little further down the same side of that exit (Image 174653).
These are just two examples of what seems like an unending trail of waste
on both sides of this exit. And I'm sure this isn't the only exit plagued
by a disregard for civil decency.

It's frustrating enough to have to sit for sometimes up to 20 min on that
exit, fighting the rush hour traffic to try to get home after a long day at
work - only to be faced by other people's trash as far as the eye can see.
What kind of an impression does this leave for the thousands of people that
drive through Menlo Park every day?

Who is responsible for maintaining this section of the road? I am wondering
if there is anything we can do to improve this situation. Maybe initiate a
campaign to educate people on the consequences of illegal dumping? Or
organize a volunteer group made up of Menlo Park residents to clean up the
garbage periodically? I am more than happy to help with any clean up
efforts. I am willing to do my part to address this issue as I believe it
is a major contributor to the negative perception of this neighborhood.

This display of disrespect for the community and the environment undermines
all the great efforts that people like you are trying to make to improve
the quality of life in our City.

Any light you can shed on this situation and how we can address it as a
community would be greatly appreciated.

Monica Montefiore
