Support for Laurel busing program

Dear City Councilmembers and MPCSD School Officials:

I am writing to share my support for a full busing program for the Upper
Laurel School. I was recently made aware that push-back from residents on
Oak Court may have impacted plans for the student busing program.

As a MP Bicycle Commissioner and a Laurel parent, I spend a fair amount of
time thinking and talking with other parents about how to get our kids to
school safely and easily. Everyone I talk with wants their kids to bike,
walk or take the bus, but for various reasons (many related to safety),
most parents end up driving their kids to school. The availability of a
busing program provides families in the district with a safe, efficient
transportation option. It reduces the number of car trips in our
residential areas and will reduce congestion around schools.

Decisions around school transportation and safety should not be dictated by
residents of a single street. As a community, we must step back and decide
what principles should guide our policies, and then apply those principles
at every turn. Here's a start: kids come first.

As I recently wrote to the City Council on the Laurel Safe Routes to
Schools issue, our streets belong to our community. Please continue to
elicit feedback from the entire community regarding school transportation
issues and balance the concerns of those who live very close to our schools
with the interests of all of the families in the district.

Thank you.
