Crossing Guards for Laurel School

Dear Esteemed City Council Members and Staff:

As you are well aware, the issue of crossing guards on Willow Road for students traveling to and from Laurel’s Upper and Lower campuses is a hot topic. I am personally invested since I have a 3rd and 5th grader attending Laurel who will be biking to the Lower Campus for the first part of the school year and to the Upper Campus after it opens in October. I also have a 7th grader who bikes to and from Hillview.

I would love to discuss how the City and the School District can share the burden of crossing guards and ensure the safety of all children and drivers in our community. The safety of our community is paramount and I believe crossing guards can help. However, I don’t believe that this is a burden that should be borne by the School District alone. As I am sure you are aware, a number of students traveling to and from Hillview and MAHS last school year were involved in accidents with motor vehicles and buses; we are all so very fortunate that none of the children sustained permanent injury. I believe we need to continue to work together to find ways to keep everyone safe on their way to school.

I would be happy to discuss any of this in person. I am available at your convenience.
