Safe Routes - Laurel School

Dear Council Members,

First we would like to say thank you for all the time and effort you put
into our community. We wanted to write in advance of your meeting tonight,
as residents of Menlo Park and parents of 2 students at Laurel (one in the
lower campus and one in the upper campus), we wanted to ask that the
Council take swift action to determine how we can create a safe route for
our children to get to both Laurel upper and lower campus. Right now
Coleman Ave and Gilbert Ave have limited thoroughfares for bikes and
pedestrians and are very harrowing for everyone during the pick up and drop
off hours. This will only get worse with the opening of the new campus in
October.

We understand the need to study the effects of any changes, but please also
consider that every month that goes by where we don't do something is a
month where one of our children could be in some sort of accident, watching
this every day in front of our house on Coleman - we really believe we are
playing with fire.

So we would ask you to consider both long term measures as well as anything
that can be done to improve the situation in the near term. This includes
(1) asking the MPPD to increase policing and traffic enforcement on a
regular basis (not just at the beginning of the year, (2) setting up a line
of communication with the County to make sure that Coleman and Ringwood are
also included in any plan and (3) any other changes or steps that the
council believes would make the routes safer in time for the new school
year.

Thanks again,

James and Cassandra Loftus
