Laurel Connector Bike Route--let's do right by our kids and families

Dear City Councilmembers,

I regret I will not be able to attend the August 23 council meeting, but I
wanted to urge you to devote some resources towards creating a safe bike
route for families trying to get between Upper and Lower Laurel schools.

The opening of Upper Laurel is an exciting event and shows the city's
ability to welcome the growing numbers of families and young children who
are flourishing here. However, it also is incumbent upon us to figure out
how to keep our neighborhoods from being overwhelmed by traffic. The lovely
residential area around Upper Laurel will soon be besieged by cars during
drop-off and pick-up times, and desperate parents will wind up parking and
stopping in unexpected places, which makes the streets more dangerous. This
is what happens at our other schools. We have an opportunity to break the
pattern if we can offer a bicycle/pedestrian alternative that is safe and

Note that if we choose to simply provide a bare minimum of bicycle and
pedestrian infrastructure, there will still be those who brave the roads
and put themselves at risk. Instead, we can choose to design our streets so
the most vulnerable users can be safe. Our youngest bicyclists and
pedestrians need us to look out for them.

Please consider putting some city resources towards studying a route that
would benefit many families and neighborhoods around Upper and Lower Laurel.
