Quiet Zone in MP

From: Krane, Elliot <"Krane,>
Date: Wed, 11 May 2016 14:38:47 +0000

Dear Council Members:

I would like to communicate my strong support for the establishment of a Quiet Zone in Menlo Park, following the precedent established by our neighbors Palo Alto and Atherton, and consistent with the regulations of the NTSB.

As a long term MP resident who lives about 100 meters from the CalTrain tracks and 200m from the crossing at Encinal I can personally attest to the daily erosion of the quality of life caused by the train horns, and the adverse medical effects of CalTrain noise resulting in nightly interruption of sleep.

The intrusive and noxious horns also depress property values in the many neighborhoods within as far as half a mile of the tracks, although these economic considerations are, of course, not primary.

After critically reviewing the available literature I am convinced that the additional crossing safety features required by Quiet Zone designation are not only of economic value but will also improve public safety as well as reduce the city's liability.

I urge the Council to expeditiously approve this measure, as supported by our mayor and many citizens and residents.

Thank you.
