Dear City Council members and Staff,

Since early 2014 the city has been gathering input from residents regarding
the changes they would like to see on El Camino Real. The community
response was strongly in favor of improving both pedestrian safety and
adding bike lanes. Both the Bicycle Commission and the Transportation
Commission have already considered the various options and voted to support
bike lanes on El Camino Real. Let's not waste the time and resources
poured into this study; there is value in improving bicycle facilities on
our segment of El Camino regardless of what our neighbors eventually decide
to do.

I write to you today as a Menlo Park resident, but I feel that it's
important to note that when I joined the Transportation Commission in 2011,
I felt that bicycles did not belong on El Camino Real -- it seemed too
dangerous. After five years on the Commission, my thinking has undergone a
complete shift. Today I understand that well-designed bike lanes improve
the safety of all road users and increase business for local merchants.
People ride bicycles on El Camino Real today because it takes them where
they need to go. We should do better for the people who need to use El
Camino, and make it safer for them. The fact that improving safety for
people on bicycles redounds to the improvement of pedestrians, as well, is
a bonus we cannot afford to overlook.

Please move the pilot study of bike lanes on El Camino Real forward as
quickly as possible.

Thank you for your consideration.

Bianca Walser
Menlo Park Resident
