Dear City Council,

I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve on the Planning Commission for the last eight years. It was a wonderful learning opportunity and I hope I was able to serve the city well in terms of achieving community planning objectives. One of the most important goals that emerged during my tenure on the commission is the importance of adding housing at all affordabilty levels in order to accommodate economic vibrancy and retain livability in Menlo Park. It took quite a long time for me to learn and understand the relationship of affordable housing and how it can help mitigate impacts of traffic, support local business, and improve livability/quality of life for everyone. It was quite an education through the two Housing Element updates and the Downtown El Camino Real Specific Planning process. I think it is vital to appoint a commissioner who deeply understands how housing works so that we can continue the momentum our community now has. We are poised to evaluate several significant projects in months ahead that include both housing and commercial space, both of which can be accommodated if done with thoughtful planning expertise. Nevada Merriman has the knowledge about housing development financial realities and challenges that could greatly enhance our ability as a city to evaluate project proposals and find mutually beneficial solutions with developers. She could also help us understand the challenges of affordable housing development in highly competitive real estate markets like we have in Menlo Park.

There are several highly qualified applicants to the Planning Commission, so I urge you to consider Nevada's unique expertise and the gender balance of the commission to enable a highly functioning civic commission.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve the city of Menlo Park!

Best regards,

Katie
