Volunteers Needed

Dear Witney, Bill, Kristiann and Kirsten,

It was a pleasure meeting/seeing all of you at the last bicycle commission
meeting. I'm the Laurel mom concerned about safety on Coleman Avenue and
I'm doing everything I can to get our kids to school safely. In addition to
the engineering/infrastructure changes that I'm interested in, I'm also
doing my part on the school side of things.

I just received the support of Laurel to hold a *Walk and Wheel to School
Day on April 13th* (only 3 weeks away)! This morning I sent an email out to
a bunch of Laurel parents requesting support to make possible a day in
which kids and their families can feel safe walking and wheeling to school
(see email below). To make the day as exciting and successful of possible,
I'm interested in the City of Menlo Park's support in the following ways:

   - Increased police presence along walking/biking route. We are still
finalizing the route but we are thinking of having families from the
Willows meet at Willow Oaks Park and then travel down Gilbert, across
Willow to Santa Monica and then take Santa Monica to Coleman Avenue.
   - Temporary no parking along the City's part of the route (stretches of
Gilbert, Santa Monica and Coleman) from 7am to 9am to make the roadway
   wider for the families.
   - "Expect Delay" signs along Gilbert so that cars will know that kids
will be traveling in the road.
   - Attendance by an elected official or other representative of the City.
   - Any additional support.

Please note that I am sending a similar email to folks in the County,
including Diana Shu, Ellen Barton, Theresa Vallez-Kelly, the Sheriff's
Department and Supervisor Don Horsely's office. I'm hoping that with help
from the City, County, school and parent community, we can give the kids a
chance to get out in the streets and bike and walk safely to school.

I realize that April 13th is only 3 weeks away and I appreciate anything
you can do to help make this day great. Thank you so much in advance for
your help.

Dear Laurel Parents,

Come join me on Wednesday, April 13th for Laurel Walk and Wheel To School
Day! This year the parents of Laurel are not just going to encourage
families to walk and bike (or scoot or hop or skip) to school, with your
help, we're going to make it safe for them to do so!

On the morning of April 13th there will be Walk and Wheel pick up
locations, and safety measures taken, stretching from the Willows all the
way to Laurel.* The Walk and Wheel route is being designed so that as many
families as possible can join the group of walkers and wheelers. A map and
time table for pick ups will be available in advance.

While the school is in support of this endeavor, for it to be be truly
successful we need your help! Specifically, we need:

   - Parent volunteers stationed at each pick-up location.
   - Parent volunteers stationed at key intersections along the route to
   ensure safe passage for families.
   - Parent volunteers accompanying the group to help keep kids safe.

In addition to parent volunteers, we are also working with the City of
Menlo Park and the County of San Mateo to make the streets safe for our
kids that morning. I will let you know when I have more information about
what safety measures they will help with, but please be assured that we
know their support is critical to make this day truly safe. Stay tuned!

For now, please sign up to help volunteer to make the morning successful.
The exact timing you'll be needed will be determined soon, but please be
prepared to help out from approximately 7:15am-8:30am. Also, please feel
free to forward this email to any parents who may be interested in helping.
The more help the better!

And...don't forget to dust off your kids' bikes, scooters and sneakers so
they'll be ready to walk and wheel on Wednesday, April 13th. Kids will need
a parent with them, so if you need to get to the gym to prepare for the
physical exertion of the morning, you have 3 weeks to get ready!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks in advance for your support and participation!

Very sincerely,

Jen Wolosin

Laurel mom to Naomi (2nd grade) and Jonah (Kindergarten)

*While not yet final, the route will likely travel from Willow Oaks Park,
down Gilbert, across Willow, along Santa Monica Avenue, down Coleman Avenue
to Ringwood, ending at Laurel.
