Oak Grove/University Bike Boulevard Proposal

Dear Council,

Menlo Park has the distinction of being the most dangerous city for
bicyclists under 15 years old of any city of its size in the state of CA
The choices we have made in the past in favor of the automobile have lead
us to the bottom of the rankings for safety. If we want to make Menlo Park
a truly family-friendly city, It is time to start making different
choices. The population of the city is changing with many younger families
moving in who understand the benefits of bike riding for themselves and
their community. MA High School will have an additional 700 students by
2020, many of whom will be commuting by bicycle. Immediate action is
necessary to ensure the safety of the increasing number of school children
on bikes.

The Bicycle Commission has worked tirelessly on a bicycle boulevard plan
that has been endorsed by the Transportation Commission, Environmental
Quality Commission, Menlo School, Sacred Heart School, MA 2020, Nativity
School/Church and Hillview School, We respectfully ask you to have the
Transportation Department study the plan and move it toward implementation
as a trial in time for the start of the 2016-17 school year. We look
forward to working with Council to turn our safety rating from worst to
best in the coming years.
